Jarvis Pendleton, an easy going millionaire is on a business trip in France. When, he sees poor orphaned Julie. Julie Andre was abandoned (as a baby) on the orphanage -homes door step. 18 years ago! She is still there and now helping teach the other children. He decides since she has had regular schooling that he will help her go to collage in the United States, but to do this he must first adopt her from the orphanage . This plan has many complications that are resolved and he leaves for the states to make other preparations. When she hears about the whole thing she is excited and wishes to go but who is this man that she has never seen or met? This question lasts for her throughout most of the movie. There are several dance scenes which I personally prefer to skip.(since they are odd and long.) All together it turns out to be a great movie.
Trivia:
Mitzi Gaynor was the studio's first choice to play Julie, but Fred Astaire personally asked for Leslie Caron.
Leslie Caron told Fred Astaire that she wanted to create her own costumes for the film. Astaire told her: "OK, but no feathers, please", recalling the utter exasperation he had with an elaborate ostrich feathered dress that Ginger Rogers insisted on wearing in Top Hat, earning Rogers the nickname of "Feathers". Feathers started shedding from Rogers' dress, creating a huge distraction during filming. The shedding feathers nightmare was hilariously recreated in a dance in Easter Parade with Astaire and Judy Garland.
The song "Texas Millionaire" is the only time Astaire's singing voice was ever dubbed. The dub vocals were performed by Thurl Ravenscroft, known mostly for being the voice of Tony the Tiger.
Fred Astaire's wife died during filming, and between some takes he would retreat to his trailer and cry. That's why, in some scenes, his eyes look red and swollen.
