The Vikings

MGM (1958) Color, 116 Min's

In this movie the story is based around, guess what.Vikings! Kirk Douglas plays Einar the Leader of the Vikings, son, his father Ragnar is played by Ernest Borgnine. Tony Curtis plays Erik, a viking slave (who  to
unbenownst him Einar and Ragnar is Ragnar son, and is the son of the former queen of England. Meaning he is the heir to the throne) several things happen including the incident when Eric telling his hawk to "kill" Einar, when Einar is calling him a liar and is beating him up.(causing the scars on Einar's face.) Soon after we find out Aella is going to be married to the princess Morgana (about 20 years his junior) played by Janet Leigh. A traitor named Egbert(James Donald) to Aella is captured then escapes and meets the vikings and goes back with them. The all come up with a plan for all of them to profit, they are going to kidnap Morgana and hold her for ransom.  Well as soon as Einar sees her he gets other ideas, however it is made quite clear that she isn't to be touched or she'll be worthless for ransom. soon Erik meets her and things really start to happen, Ragnar lets Einar "have her" but then when he is on the boat where she is being held, Eric steps in and he and his deaf and dumb friend another woman (a "sorcerer") and of course Morgana's lady-in-waiting, are on the run. Einar wakes up and gets all of the vikings out looking for them. There is a boat chase including a ship wrecking on a rock. Ragnar is swimming and ends up on Eric's boat, Eric decides to go to England and get Aella to break Morgana's pledge to him. Also (not knowing Ragnar is his father) gives him up to Aella and perhaps give Aella more reason to give him Morgana.

Quotes:

Morgana: This bodice is too tight, I'll have to stop.
Eric: What's a bodice?

Eric: Still afraid?
Morgana: No. I'm worth much more alive than dead. Are you?

Eric: I didn't steal you away just to give you to another man.

Goofs:

As Einar returns home after kidnapping Morgana, the mic is visible in the lower left corner of the screen as Ragnar walks out to greet Einar (roughly 46 minutes into the movie).

When Erik rescues Morgana and her maid they get into a rowboat with the two men near the bow and the two women in front of them. There is even a whole sequence when Erik rips the back of Morgana's dress open. A few seconds later they have switched positions and the women are near the bow of the boat with the men in front of them.

When tony Curtis is about to face down Aella, he drives his sword into a Briton, which comes back up into shot covered in blood. Immediately afterwards he charges into the tower, but his sword is clean

Trivia:

At the end of the film, a Viking ship is set afire by flaming arrows in a rendering of a traditional Viking funeral. Director Richard Fleischer took great care to have the archers practice the moment, training them to release the arrows on the count of "three," and hoping at least some of the arrows would arc properly to hit the sail of the ship and set it on fire. When the time came for the live shot, the director only reached the count of "two", when one over-eager archer loosed his arrow. As luck would have it, the arrow arced perfectly and hit the sail. Then, Fleischer called, "Three!" and the other archers loosed their arrows. Fleischer decided that he liked the one, single arrow being launched first, and kept the shot in the film because it looked like part of the ceremony.

In an interview given shortly after the release of the film both Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis said that they had been cold during the entire filming. The water in the fjord was just above freezing and the air temperature was only slightly warmer.

The opaque scleral contact lens that Kirk Douglas wore to simulate his blinded eye was incredibly painful. He could only stand to have it in place for a few minutes at a time.

The three Viking ships in the film were designed using blueprints for an actual Viking ship salvaged from the water and restored by a Viking museum in Norway. It turned out that the boats built for the film were too accurate, because the modern actors were taller than their historical counterparts. Every other oar hole had to be plugged so the modern men would have room to row with a full oar stroke. Otherwise, they would hit the backs of the oarsmen seated in front of them when pushing the oar handles forward to start each new stroke.

Ernest Borgnine plays the father of Kirk Douglas. In real life Borgnine is one and a half months younger than Douglas.

Stuntmen had practiced for weeks for the oar walking scenes. Kirk Douglas told director Richard Fleischer that he could do it and did several times. At one point when he did fall in the icy water he calmly swam over to the camera boat and asked if they had gotten good shots. He then swam back to the Viking longboat. Fleischer noted they were watching and filming an activity that had not been done in a thousand years.
