In this classic romantic drama Humphrey Bogart plays a boat owner with Walter Brennan as a first mate. Lauren Becall comes into the picture, as a girl without enough money to get home. The two immediately attract, when Bogart is approached by some free French fighters at first he refuses, but when he finds out Becall needs money he agrees and from then on its Bogart fighting the Germans and romancing Becall! Watch it some time its great!

The film debut of Lauren Bacall. The DVD sleeve notes state that she was nineteen years of age at the time whilst her dialogue in the film indicates that she was playing a character (Marie 'Slim' Browning) which was aged twenty-two years of age.
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall fell in love during production.
When Howard Hawks discovered Lauren Bacall, he gave her the choice to work with either Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart. She was very tempted to work with Grant, but Hawks ended up casting her with Bogart in To Have and Have Not, and one of Hollywood's greatest romances was started.
