Donavan's Reef

Paramount (1963) Color, 109 Mins

In this movie based in as south pacific island John Wayne plays Guns Donavan, owner of several large boats a saloon and part time honorary uncle to three children. Lee Marvin plays his old friend Boats Gilhooley who comes to the island every year to celebrate their birthdays together,(which are on the same day)( and in usual John Wayne Lee Marvin fashion.) The three kids are the children of Dr.William Dedham a very popular man on the islands, he built a small hospital and treats just about everyone on the islands. A few years ago he was married to the princess of the islands but she died in child birth. Before that Dr.Dedham was married to a  Boston society lady with whom he had a daughter. He has never seen his daughter from his first marriage even though she is much older than his other children.  The Doctor is going to the different islands for about two weeks to treat everyone who can not come to him. After a recent death in the family his grown daughter Amelia comes to the island nose in the air to try and get proof he should be cut out of the will of the recently departed and all of the stocks that would go to him. He is not on the island when she arrives and thanks to the Captain of the ship she came on Guns decides he needs to call the children his own temporarily, and goes all out in moving them in with him. After she arrives sufficiently soaked, he takes her to the Doc beautiful house, we see a painting of the princess hanging on the wall and a quizzical look on Amelia face. We go on to see the different funny and interesting things that happen while waiting for the doc to come back, (and even after he comes back.) You may see the ending coming but this is one funny charming movie.
