Starring Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara, its a swashbuckling movie it is. It sparks excitement and romance. It also has George Sanders, Anthony Quinn and Thomas Mitchell in slightly smaller roles. The whole story is based in the mid 17th century. The theme, PIRATES! In this not so ordinary pirate movie, Tyrone Power plays Jamie Warring, a captured pirate, second in command to Henry Morgan himself. (Who had also been arrested and was to be hanged.) Jamie (or Jamie boy, as he is called by his friends) is set free by his friend and fellow captain, Tommy Blue(Mitchell), then Morgan himself comes, and Jamie gets a surprise. Capt.Morgan got a full pardon, and is soon to be the new Governor of Jamaica. The previous Governor Lord Denby's daughter(Maureen) is a feisty lady, who tries to kill Jamie at one point. Sanders and Quinn play Leech and Wogan, captain and first mate(and captain of Leech's second boat), two of the few pirates previously associated with Morgan, who refused to stop pirating, after Morgan became governor. Morgan soon sends Jamie, Tommy and several other of his captains, ( who all used to be fellow pirates) to capture Leech, but he escapes. Come to find out there is an informant in the governors staff, working for Leech telling him about boats worth robbing and such. Who is the informant and will Jamie Boy win?
(confidentially, OF COURSE!! but its a lot of fun to watch it happen.)
Trivia:
The original ending was cut and a new one shot so that the film would pass the censor. The original ending had both Tyrone Power's and Maureen O'Hara's character jumping into the sea.
To help out the war effort, the actors tried hard to keep the number of takes low so as to conserve film. Roughly thirty of the scenes were done in one take.
The ship in the picture was also used in the films, The Princess and the Pirate (starring Bob Hope)and Captain Kidd(Starring Randolph Scott).
Capt. Morgan: I wish my nature hadn't changed. I'd have made that whole assembly walk the plank.
Jamie: Can't go wrong drowning politicians, Henry.
