Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

MGM (1954) Color, 102 Mins

Up in Oregon there is a man named Adam(Howard Keel) who wants to get himself a wife. He goes to town, after seeing a few he sees Milly(Jane Powell) he watches her work and thinks she is perfect. He proposes and she says yes, they get married and go up to his farm. When they arrive Adams brother Caleb "greets" them, then Adams other brothers Dan and Ephraim, then Benjamin and Frank and Gideon. After the Milly realises, Adam was afraid to tell her, she soon sees how unmannered they all are and soon she begins to soften them, and they become clean shaved tall and strapping young gentlemen, (well not completely) Ephriam has a starts out on the wrong foot in town with a girl while his brothers look on, soon a fight starts ad Ben licks the three fellas taking offense at his brother. Milly gives them further lessons and tips to help there conversation starting. They get ready for the barn raising coming up in about a month, and are so well prepared they surprise Adam. They dance better than any of the other men and all get themselves a girl. Since girls are scarce and all their girls were someone Else's before, a fight begin once they start the actual barn raising. They go home all in love and slightly dejected, since Milly told them not to fight and says the girls won't like them as much now that they did. For a while they all are lovesick and cannot concentrate, Benjamin gets tired of the snow and drudgery (and no Dorcas (his girl) and tells Milly he is going to leave, she tells Adam and of course he also has noticed their loneliness, and suggests they go and get theirs girls, and marry them. Of course his route is a little different than the conventional route he has been reading all about these women who where taken back in the day, and tells the boys they should go down to town and kidnap the girls. They are all enthused and without telling Milly, (of course) they go to town. They succeed in kidnapping them but forget the parson, waking up the whole town because of the screaming girls, and an avalanche in between them and civilization that occurred during their flight, doesn't help. Once they return the girls are in sobs, and Milly orders the men out of the house they're to live in the barn till the snow clears. Well Adam is obviously in charge of this mess, and yet thinks she doesn't mean him, he gets mad and leaves to live in an even higher small cabin by himself. Well over the cold months the girls start warming up to each of their guys little by little, and when it becomes warm they are really boiling. Milly has a baby, and Gideon goes to get Adam (unsuccessfully), but its not long before Adam comes back announces the snow is melted, apologizes to Milly and tells them they need to take the girls back, before the whole town comes to the farm. You'll love it, a musical, and romantic comedy.

Sorry  about the longness but this movie is good.

Milly: You're winter underwear that you're sleeping in. You might as well hand it over because you're not gonna get your clothes or food or nothing til you get all cleaned up and shaved.
Ben Pontipee: Where's Adam? We wanna talk to Adam.
Milly: He's out plowing, he had his breakfast over a half an hour ago. I got hot muffins waiting, crisp bacon, steak, fryer potatoes, fresh ground coffee. Now do I get that winter underwear or do I have to come in there and take it off of you?
Ben Pontipee: Don't listen to her. She wouldn't dare.
Milly: Oh wouldn't I?

Benjamin Pontipee: Come back, Dorcas, you'll get hurt!

Gideon: [after Millie gives birth] I'm an uncle!
[faints]

Trivia:

Jacques d'Amboise had to leave before filming was finished because he was still under contract with the New York City Ballet, so someone filled in for him during the last few days. You can see someone else playing Ephraim in the scene where the brothers are pacing downstairs while Milly is giving birth.

Jeff Richards (a former professional baseball player) was one of the two "brothers" not chosen for his dancing ability. The other being Howard Keel, who was an actor/singer.

Only four of the brothers were dancers. Russ Tamblyn (Gideon) was an acrobat, and Jeff Richards (Benjamin) was an actor. Benjamin rarely dances in the movie.

Julie Newmar (Dorcas) was already an accomplished dancer but she never got a chance to show off her skills because her dance partner Jeff Richards (Benjamin Pontipee) was a former professional baseball player with no dancing skills.

Shot in only 48 days.

Rehearsals for the barn-raising sequence took 3 weeks

Because there was no way of distinguishing between them and the Town Suitors, MGM decided to make all the Pontipee Brothers red-headed.
